Excess, in plain figures.

The excess is what you contribute towards a claim. Choosing a higher one lowers your premium. Some claims attract more than one excess, and where they do we say so.

Questions about travel cover

Australia has reciprocal health care agreements. Is that enough?

No. Australia has agreements with eleven countries including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland and Italy. They cover immediately necessary medical treatment in the public system. They do not cover medical evacuation home, they do not cover repatriation, and they do not cover cancellation or luggage. Evacuation is the expensive part, and it is routinely six figures.

Do I have to declare an existing medical condition?

Yes, if you want it covered. Some conditions are automatically covered without assessment. Others need a short online assessment, and most are accepted for an additional premium and a higher excess. An undeclared condition means a claim arising from it is declined, so it is worth the ten minutes.

What does Smartraveller advice do to my cover?

If the Australian Government has a Do Not Travel advisory in place for a destination and you go anyway, cover for that destination does not apply. Lower advisory levels do not affect cover. Check smartraveller.gov.au before you buy and again before you fly, because levels change.

Is a domestic trip worth insuring?

Medical is not the reason, since Medicare covers you. Cancellation, accommodation you have already paid for, luggage and the rental vehicle excess are. A domestic policy is materially cheaper because the medical section is not doing the work.

Does the policy cover my rental car excess?

Yes, up to $8,000, in Australia and overseas. It covers the excess the hire company charges you after damage or theft, which is usually far more than the daily waiver they will sell you at the counter.
